ECM IN AN ASSESEMENT MEETING OF COMMISSIONS
The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) is currently organizing a day-long assessment and integration meeting for all Pastoral agents, Social Directorates, Finance, and administration agents within the conference. The meeting is taking place at Linde motel in Mponela, under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe. The main purpose of this gathering is to reflect on and evaluate how these agents are effectively implementing the ECM Vision and Mission.
During his opening address, the ECM Secretary General, Very Reverend Fr Valerian Mtseka, emphasized the importance of holistic evangelization. He stated, “In order to become the family of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and positively impact the lives of all Malawians, regardless of tribal, creed, or political affiliations, we must first understand our past, assess our present situation, and envision our desired future.”
To encourage active engagement, the Secretary General urged all members of the Commissions from every Diocese in the country to participate fully. He expressed deep concern that sometimes the commission’s work occurs in isolation from the ECM spirituality, which is integral to defining their Catholic identity beyond just being social workers.
“To achieve our mission and vision, we must prioritize efficient commitment, collaboration, and integration. This requires a sense of oneness and the seamless sharing of information between the national office and dioceses as we work together to implement strategic initiatives in the areas of Pastoral, Social Directorate, Finance, and Administration,” challenged the Secretary-General.
He also emphasized the importance of avoiding competition and ensuring a fair distribution of resources to achieve our goals. He expressed hope that the meeting would be fruitful if members were open and constructive in their discussions.
In addition, Very Rev. Fr. Mtseka seized the opportunity to announce an upcoming sub-region conference involving Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe bishops in 2024. He encouraged all members to actively participate in the preparatory activities, details of which will be announced soon.
The meeting has drawn participants from various commissions, including the Pastoral Commission, Health, CCJP, Communication and Research, CADECOM, Education, Finance, and Administration. Mr. Carsterns Mulume, the former National Social Directorate Coordinator, is serving as the lead facilitator.
